Roofing debris is accepted, but shingles may fill only one-half of the dumpster by volume, and you are responsible for any weight over the included limit (2, 2.5 or 3 tons depending on size, then $50 per extra ton). If you are unsure about a material, call (803) 679-8899 before it goes in.
Why a Roofing Job Needs a Different Plan Than a Cleanout
A roof tear-off is not like clearing out a garage. Old shingles are bulky, but the bigger issue is weight. A dumpster full of furniture and cardboard can have plenty of room left and still be light. A dumpster with a lot of shingles can hit its weight limit long before it looks full.
That is why a roofing dumpster rental in Aiken SC should be planned around two things at once: how much space the debris needs and how much it weighs. The rest of this guide covers both, using our current sizes, pricing and rules.
What Roofing Debris Can Go in the Dumpster
Most of what comes off a roof is accepted. Here is how common roofing materials fit our three material categories:
| Roofing Material | Status | What to Know |
|---|---|---|
| Roof shingles | Special handling | Accepted only to one-half of the dumpster's capacity by volume. Weight overages still apply. |
| Underlayment and roofing felt | Accepted | Light, so it makes good filler alongside shingles. |
| Roof decking (plywood, OSB, boards) | Accepted | Bulky but lighter than shingles. |
| Nails, flashing, drip edge, metal | Accepted | Loose in the debris is fine. Keep sharp scrap inside the trailer. |
| A/C or HVAC units removed from the roof | Special handling | Placed beside the dumpster, $25 fee per unit. |
| Brick, mortar, concrete from a chimney | Prohibited | Heavy masonry is never accepted. |
| Liquid roofing cement, sealants, paint, solvents | Prohibited | Liquids of any kind are not accepted. |
The full lists live on our accepted, special-handling and prohibited materials page and in our guide to what you can put in a dumpster rental in Aiken SC. If the two ever seem to disagree with something you read elsewhere, those pages are the ones to trust.
Why Shingles Get Heavy Fast
Asphalt shingles are dense, and a tear-off often means several layers of material plus decking and underlayment. Weight adds up quickly, and it is measured at the disposal facility after pickup, so you cannot judge it by eye from the driveway.
The half-capacity rule limits how much space shingles can take. It does not raise the weight allowance. A half load of shingles can still go over the included tons, and extra weight is billed at $50 per ton.
Practical ways to stay in control:
- Load shingles up to the halfway mark, no higher. Fill the rest with lighter material like underlayment and decking.
- Put heavy material down first and spread it across the floor of the trailer rather than piling it in one spot.
- Do not overfill. Debris must stay below the side boards so the trailer can be transported legally.
- Think about the whole job. If the tear-off plus decking repair is large, plan for a swap (see below) instead of cramming everything into one load.
Choosing a Dumpster Size for a Roofing Project
We offer three sizes. Each rental includes 3 days plus 1 dump.
| Size | Box Dimensions | Base Price | Included Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 yard | 12 x 7 x 4 ft | $285 | 2 tons |
| 15 yard | 14 x 7 x 4 ft | $345 | 2.5 tons |
| 17 yard | 16 x 7 x 4 ft | $375 | 3 tons |
For roofing, weight usually matters more than volume, so the larger sizes give you a higher included weight as well as more room. The extra-day charge is $25 per day and extra weight is $50 per ton. Swap (dump and return) is available Monday through Friday, 7am to 5pm, at the base rate for that size minus 10%, with a new 3-day period starting at the swap.
Not sure which one fits your roof? Compare all three on the sizes and pricing page, try the Find My Dumpster tool, or call us with your roof's approximate size and number of layers and we will help you think it through. Our dumpster size guide also explains how cubic yards translate to real debris.
Homeowner Roofing Projects vs. Contractor Roofing Projects
The rules are the same for both. What differs is who is on site, who loads, and who is paying attention to the weight.
Driveway-Safe Placement for a Roofing Dumpster
Roofing jobs are usually done at a house, and the dumpster sits close to the work. Our rubber-wheeled dump trailers and careful placement are designed to minimize the risk of driveway damage compared with traditional roll-off containers. A heavy roofing load still puts weight on whatever it sits on, so a few details help:
- Overhead clearance: we need at least 12 feet of clearance for delivery and pickup, so check branches and wires over the driveway.
- Space: allow the box length plus about 3 feet for the tongue (for example, a 14 ft box needs roughly 17 ft in total).
- Close to the roof edge: a spot near where debris comes off saves carrying and keeps the load more even.
- Soft or cracked pavement, grass or a tight entrance: mention it when you book so we can talk through placement.
Do not move the trailer yourself once it is delivered. If it needs repositioning, call us. More on this approach in our article on why driveway-safe dumpster rentals matter in Aiken SC.
When to Call Before You Load
A quick call is cheaper than a refused load or a surprise fee. Call (803) 679-8899 first if:
- You are not sure whether a material is accepted, special handling or prohibited.
- You are removing a chimney, skylight, solar panel, vent equipment or other rooftop hardware.
- You find something unexpected, such as old paint cans, sealant buckets or suspected asbestos-containing material. Asbestos is never accepted.
- The tear-off looks bigger than one trailer and you want to plan a swap.
- You are not sure your driveway or access point can handle delivery.
